Imagine a perfectly Smooth Peppino.

Sliding/Rolling, Crouching, and Grab Sliding are mechanics used to shrink Peppino's hitbox and gain instant speed. Which one you get depends on the state you are in when you press DOWN:

  • By pressing DOWN at a walk or a standstill, Peppino will Crouch and be able to move left or right at 4 speed.
  • By pressing DOWN while running at any speed, Peppino will Slide or Roll and continue moving at the whatever speed he was going before the Slide, not accelerating.
  • By pressing DOWN while Grabbing on the ground, Peppino will Grab Slide, which instantly sets Peppino to 12 speed.
  • Pressing DOWN while in the air will result in either a Bodyslam or Dive depending on what Jump state Peppino is in.

Crouching and Sliding are instantly canceled into Standing/Dashing when you let go of DOWN, while Grab Slide lasts for a minimum of 25 frames from when you press DOWN, and will continue for as long as you press DOWN afterwards and transition into Mach Dash (or Skid if DASH is not held).

Grab Slide is one of the fastest ways to accelerate from a standstill, but because Peppino moves quite far in the 25 frames you aren't actionable, you may not have space to fit it in without bonking or diving off a ledge. This move can also be situationally useful to slow down to 12 speed, such as in the Fake Peppino Escape.

If you slide off of a ledge while performing a grab slide, Peppino will Dive down, then transition into a roll once he lands. Note that the 25-frame inactionable window (from when the Grab Slide started) still applies after Diving off a ledge and landing, which can cause unintentional bonks.
