General Strategies
As John Gutter is the first level in Pizza Tower, it expects little from the player and does not have any sort of proper challenge. The only real advice to give for John Gutter is to learn the layout of the level. For a map of each room, see below.
Toppins and Routing
Every category requires you to collect each toppin in John Gutter, as they are directly in the way of the level with exception of the Pineapple, however, it's very easy to get it simply by climbing up to it and continuing the level from there.
Cheese Toppin Jump
Intermediate - All Categories
Holding jump to boost off the Forkknight and Cheeseslime allows collecting the Cheese Toppin without slowing down.
Doing a neutral run to the toppin can make this strat more reliable. For 101%, because of the sheer amount of score during the P rank run and the fact that the level must be played twice, this strat can be attempted twice in case you do not get it in the first run of the level, provided you get the rest of the toppins during the P rank run. The sausage toppin can be collected both before and after Pizza Time. As such, missing it is not an issue because it can be collected on the escape with no time loss.
There are multiple strategies for collecting the pineapple toppin. (WIP, elaborate)
Chef Tasks
Obtainability: Break every Dead John Block.
Optimizations: Nothing. This achievement is almost impossible to not get unless you intentionally avoid the blocks, which you have no reason to, as they are breakable blocks and do not impede your progress in any way. This is extremely hard to miss even in an Any% IL John Gutter run.
Obtainability: Finish the whole level within 2 minutes.
Optimizations: The only way to get this achievement in a 101% run is to play John Gutter twice, due to the goal of getting a P-rank in the level, which requires you to do get all secrets, the treasure, and to finish a second lap, takes way over 2 minutes to do. Play the level through as fast as possible the first time around. When at the exit door, you can press up and pause at the same time, and then restart the level. This will let you get the achievement without needing to go back to the hub saving a few seconds. After that, go through the level again, getting the rest of the chef tasks and the P rank.
Note: Doing this will render RSS infeasible for the second run of the level. Given that in-game timer is used for timing runs, you should exit the level normally on your second run.
Optimizations: Get a 99 combo. This requires you to kill every single enemy in the level, including John himself, and all enemies that respawn during Pizza Time/Lap 2.
Optimizations: Supertaunting is the easiest way to clear out a lot of enemies at once. Play the level as normal, making sure to kill every enemy with a supertaunt that you cannot kill both by running through the level and also during the escape.
(TODO: Insert gifs/videos)
Upon exiting the first secret, use your supertaunt to kill the forknight at the top to have a straight path to the room’s exit.
After entering the second pizzabox, dive down to kill one of the cheeseslimes and progress through the level, taking the upper shortcut to get the sausage toppin.
In the room with Gerome, do a superjump, and grab him immediately then run to the next room, killing both forknights on the top platforms. If you are not fast enough you can use a supertaunt to kill them. After exiting the pillar room, drop down and get rid of both monkeys, afterwards enter the secret and progress through the escape.
In the escape take the bottom path. When getting close to the end of the room, grabslide to slow down and dive into the gap and kill the last cheeseslime. If you are going too fast you will end up bonking into the wall. After exiting the pizzabox supertaunt to kill the 2 cheeseslimes on the platform and the minijohn.
Upon entering lap 2 you should have a combo of 74 if you haven’t left any enemy behind
During lap 2 it is possible to dispatch 3 enemies near the third secret area with a supertaunt.
Miscellaneous Room Optimizations
Negative Mach
TAS - All Categories
It is possible to retain mach 3 state with reduced speed using Negative Mach, allowing you to destroy to metal block by simply diving.

Mach Launch Strat
Beginner - Individual Level Any%
Near the end of John Gutter, one can smoothly reach the pillar room with a well-executed Mach Launch. Perform the Mach Launch to gain height and do a grab to reach the ledge on the right.
High Jump Strat
TAS - Any% - 100%
As you enter the room, jump over the platform and Super Taunt to kill the monkey above before it can put down a banana, which will otherwise spoil the trick. Then jump to the floor above, do a small hop, and do a grab as you finish the climb. The small hop will be used to end your dash as you land (remember to release DASH). As you land and end your dash, perform a High Jump to reach the top level of the room. Note: As of the latest update, the popup bug has been removed, thus making this trick extremely difficult to perform due to the additional small hop that is now required. Discovered by LeKukie |
For 100%, Gerome and the Pineapple toppin can be grabbed afterwards while maintaining speed by doing an instaturn. |
Early Mach Launch Strat
Expert - Any%
By jumping onto the first platform above and mach launching off of it, it is possible to gain enough height to reach the toppin. You can then continue dashing, do a short hop to dodge the forknight’s fork and proceed smoothly.
